What is the Freedom of Information Act?

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) explains that the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) provides “public access to information held by public authorities”, such as schools.

The FOIA provides “public access to information held by public authorities”

The FOIA places two main obligations on public authorities. They must:

  • Proactively publish certain information about their activities
  • Respond to requests for information from members of the public
